zsh is a shell probably most similar to ksh, but with countless enhancements and differences.

XMLStarlet is a set of command line utilities (tools) to transform, query, validate, and edit XML documents and files using simple set of shell commands in similar way it is done for text files with UNIX grep, sed, awk, diff, patch, join, etc utilities.

The Heirloom Project provides standard Unix utilities.

iSH is an open source project that allows for a Linux shell environment to run locally on your iOS device. It does this through a usermode x86 emulation and syscall translation. With iSH you can run Linux applications and programs on iOS, access the Alpine package manager, and install programs with apk add <name>. iSH also features a keyboard addition that makes navigation a whole lot easier.

win-bash is port of the GNU bash for Microsoft Windows NT based systems. It is independent from the cygwin library and any other non-standard DLL and does not need any registry variables. win-bash is based on bash_nt from Mountain Math Software. The active development of the project has been discontinued, mainly because of the old age of the code. There are more modern and more bug free alternatives today, which we recommend to use.

Seal is a free, open source 32-bit GUI written primarily for DOS compatible systems.

Blackbox for Windows is an alternative shell for Microsoft Windows. It is based stylistically on the Blackbox window manager for the X Window System, however it does not use the same codebase except for the gradient rendering code.

scponly is an alternative 'shell' (of sorts) for system administrators who would like to provide access to remote users to both read and write local files without providing any remote execution priviledges.

rssh is a restricted shell for use with OpenSSH, allowing only scp and/or sftp.

Rootsh is a wrapper for shells which logs all echoed keystrokes and terminal output to a file and/or to syslog. It's main purpose is the auditing of users who need a shell with root privileges. They start rootsh through the sudo mechanism.

Mirdir allows to synchronize two directory trees in a fast way. Only the differences between the two sets of files are copied while the excess files/directories in the destination tree are removed (unless there was an explicit request to keep them).

A modular framework for implementing a CISCO-like CLI on a *NIX system. Arbitary command menus and actions can be defined using XML files. This software handles the user interaction, and forks the appropriate system commands to perform any actions.

ICMP Shell (ISH) is a telnet-like protocol. It allows users to connect to a remote host and to open a shell using only ICMP to send and receive data. ICMP Shell was written in C for the UNIX environment.

sudosh is a sudo shell, filter and can be used as a login shell. Sudosh records all keystrokes and output and can play back the session as just like a VCR.

FLoM is a free open source distributed lock manager that can be used to synchronize shell commands, scripts and custom developed software. When used in a shell environment, FLoM manages process synchronization in the same way that "nice" manages process prioritization. env-switcher effectively allows users to manipulate the environment loaded for all shells (including non-interactive remote shells) without manually editing their startup dot files -- something that users traditionally have difficultly doing properly.
