The stick was built using YUMI-exFAT-1.0.3.7 which uses Ventoy 1.1.11. I had Clonezilla live 3.3.1-35 in my ISOs folder and got the "Box" error at the same ctrl-c/partition enumeration point as @Bodenseematze describes. "entertaining" thing is after I did the restore, the unallocated space was still there. Incidentally I had to use supergrub to boot into linux. The windows boot worked fine. So the UUID issue might be there but since the unallocated problem wasn't solved, I didn't spend any time on the linux boot. So gparted wipes the partition when converting back and from fat32 to ext4. I suspected as much which is why I did the backup.
